Nick Mescher ('70) created an indelible mark on Urbana University basketball history as a forward from 1966- 70. At 6-foot-1, this Maria Stein, Ohio native proved to be a giant among small college players in the state. Upon completion of his playing career, he stood alone atop the Blue Knight scoring list with 1,471 points over 96 games. He ranked 7th in career scoring at the time of his induction, averaging 15.3 ppg over the four years. He shot 51 percent from the floor and 72 percent from the free throw line over his career.

Nick was named the Blue Knight Most Valuable Player as a sophomore, junior and senior. As a freshman, he earned the Coach's Award from Jerry Walke. While a player, Nick, who coach Walke called "...the greatest competitor I have ever coached," led his team to an eye-popping four-year 70-28 mark.

Mescher was a multi-sport star in high school and Urbana University. Here, he won letters in basketball, track and baseball, and returned after his playing days were over to aid head coach John Stanley as a student coach. In addition, Nick was named to "Who's Who in American Athletes."

It was only appropriate that Nick joins former teammates Terry Anderson, Harold Howe, Jon Plunkett and Mark Todd - "The Four Freshmen." This quintet provided Blue Knight crowds with high scoring and stingy defense.
