Lester Baum was synonymous with Urbana University from the time it became a four-year institution (1968-69) until his retirement a quarter century later. Baum coached and taught at five other colleges prior to his arrival at Urbana, where he coached wrestling for 20 years and cross-country for six seasons.

He was also intramural director for 21 years and spent two years as Director of Athletics. In all, his career in education and coaching spanned 41 years. Several of his wrestlers qualified for the NAIA national tournament, with two of those preceding him into the Hall of Fame.

Additionally, many of his former students and athletes owe a debt of gratitude to Lester Baum for his willing assistance with employment opportunities following graduation. The man we call "Pardner" is truly deserving of this honor.
