URBANA, Ohio – Urbana University's
Tyler Chavez and
Chaz Hafer have been named to the 2020 Off the Block/Frisco Mo All-Independent Team revealed by the nationwide voting committee on Thursday.
Chavez, a freshman outside attacker from Las Vegas, Nevada, earned four votes for All-Independent Freshman of the Year and two votes for Player of the Year. He led the Blue Knights with 3.20 points per set while totaling 186 kills in 19 matches. Chavez was also second on the team in receptions and third in digs per set. His best outing was when he recorded a career-high 26 kills against Tusculum on Feb. 22. He produced 15 kills on 22 attempts in UU's win over Alderson-Broaddus on Feb. 16.
Hafer, a junior setter from Norco, California, recorded 566 assists through 20 matches of the shortened season. He led Urbana with 22 aces and 102 digs, while finishing sixth on the team in kills. Hafer's top performance came against Tusculum on Feb. 22, where he logged 50 assists, 10 digs, five aces and three blocks.
The All-Independent Team recognizes the best players during the regular season from NCAA Division I-II men's volleyball teams that are competing without a conference affiliation. The seven independent teams this season were Alderson Broaddus, Daemen, Lincoln Memorial, St. Francis Brooklyn, Tusculum, Queens and Urbana.
Lincoln Memorial led all schools with four All-Independent Team selections. Both Daemen and Urbana had multiple players make the All-Independent Team.
Along with these schools, St. Francis Brooklyn, Tusculum and Queens each were represented on the All-Independent Team.
The 10 players who received the most votes, regardless of their position, were placed on the All-Independent Team. A tie resulted in 11 players making the All-Independent Team this year.
This is the third season that Off the Block has presented the All-Independent Team for NCAA Division I-II men's volleyball. Off the Block is a website that launched in 2011 and is the nation's leader in college men's volleyball coverage.
Along with presenting the All-Independent Team, Off the Block presents the Independent Teams Player of the Year and the Independent Teams Freshman of the Year. The college men's volleyball website also presented the Independent Teams Player of the Week throughout the regular season.
