Stoner Homers Again, but Urbana Falls at UVa-Wise

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 WISE, Va. - Caitlyn Stoner homered for the fifth time in nine games, but UU softball came up short in both games of a doubleheader at UVa-Wise Thursday afternoon. The Cavs blanked UU in the opener 3-0, before outlasting the Blue Knights 7-3 in Game 2 of the cross-divisional matchup at Cavalier Field.

Records Update
UU dropped to 15-19 overall and 11-13 in league play while Wise improved to 25-15 (16-8 MEC) overall.

Game 1 (Wise 3, UU 0)
The Blue Knights were one-hit by the reigning National Pitcher of the Week Taylor Brandts, who has thrown 56 consecutive scoreless innings in the circle for UVa-Wise.

UU had three total runners reach base and couldn't capitalize on the few opportunities. Courtney Stewart led off the fourth inning with the only hit, but was thrown out trying to stretch out a double. Margo Jackson and Stoner drew a pair of two-out walks later on in the inning, but a ground-ball out ended the threat.

The host Cavaliers grabbed a 1-0 lead in the second inning and added two more runs in the sixth. UU's Carly Allen had a decent outing, allowing eight hits with three walks and two strikeouts. Although, the freshman right-hander was charged with the hard-luck loss.

Game 2 (Wise 7, UU 3)
UU never led in Game 2, but got within a run of the Cavs on two separate occasions. Wise took a 2-0 lead in the first inning, and then Jackson's RBI single up the middle made it 2-1 in the third.

However, the Cavs responded with two runs of their own in the bottom of the third for a 4-1 lead.

Two innings later, Stoner launched her seventh home run over the left-field wall. The redshirt junior is now only two home runs shy of setting the school's new all-time career record. The two-run shot also scored Stewart, who led off the inning with a single, as the Blue Knights were down 4-3.

That was as close as UU would get after the Cavs produced three insurance runs in the sixth and held on for the series sweep.

UU outhit Wise in the second contest, 9-8, led by Riley Curtis (3 for 3) and Bailee Faulkner (2 for 4).

Stewart (5-8) tossed five-and-a-third innings inside the circle and was dealt the loss.

Up Next
Urbana returns back to action Friday afternoon for another cross-divisional matchup at Concord. Game times are 1 & 3 p.m. ET.
