WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The Urbana University softball team fell twice on the final day of its trip to The Spring Games, hosted by PFX Athletics.
UU (4-6) lost 4-0 to UIndy before suffering a 5-1 setback against Wayne State (NE). The Blue Knights tallied just four hits in each game.
Conference play commences this weekend in the home opener against Wheeling on Saturday and West Liberty on Sunday.
In Wednesday's first game against UIndy, the Blue Knights had just one runner reach second base.
McKinley Alberts went 2 for 3 while
Mia Smallwood and
Erin Gardner each singled.
UIndy scored three runs in the first, including a two-run homer off the bat of Emily O'Connor. The Greyhounds added another run in the sixth inning.
Madison Bryant logged a complete-game effort in the circle, tossing six frames with two earned runs on four hits. She walked six and struck out four.
UIndy starter Hallie Waters improved to 8-2 after a seven-strikeout performance.
In Game 2 against Wayne State, the Blue Knights had the tying runs on base with no outs in the fourth but couldn't capitalize on the scoring opportunity.
Urbana left five runners on base as Wayne State outhit the Blue Knights 8-4. The Wildcats tacked on two runs in the seventh to seal the win.
Macey Hartman doubled, while Alberts, Smallwood and Gardner each singled again in the second game.
Kayleigh Pate was charged with the loss despite allowing just two earned runs on five hits.
Ashley Fite and
Jade Laviolette combined for three innings of relief.
Wayne State's Maddie Moser earned the win while Sloan Cooksey picked up the save.
