Softball drops Tuesday twinbill in Florida

AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The Urbana University softball team dropped both contests in Tuesday's doubleheader at The Spring Games, hosted by PFX Athletics.

UU (4-4) fell 6-0 to Rockhurst in the early morning matchup before coming up short against Northwood, 4-1.

The team's Spring Break trip will wrap up tomorrow with a pair of games against UIndy and Wayne State. The Blue Knights are slated to open conference play this weekend at home.

In Game 1, freshman first baseman Ashley Fite had the only base knock as Rockhurst outhit Urbana, 10-1.

The Hawks scored twice in each of the first, third and fifth innings. RU left fielder Lauren Marks went 2 for 2 with a double and four RBI.

Madison Bryant was tagged with her first loss after a rocky start. The sophomore had thrown 13 consecutive frames without allowing an earned run. Kayleigh Pate recorded six strikeouts in four innings of work.

Rockhurst starter Lexie Storrer (6-4) struck out six in six shutout innings with a pair of walks. She retired 14 of the first 18 batters she faced.

In Game 2, Urbana had its first three batters reach safely in the bottom of the sixth facing a 3-0 deficit, but would only push one run across.

Northwood tacked on an insurance run in the seventh and the Blue Knights went quietly in their final at-bat.

The Timberwolves outhit the Blue Knights 8-5 in the second game.

Junior Britney Bonno doubled while sophomore Mia Smallwood, along with freshmen Faith Strapp, Ashley Fite and Kaelyn Stenger each singled. Fite brought home UU's lone run.

Pate (2-2) struck out six more hitters in the second game, tossing five frames of five-hit ball. Fite and Jade Laviolette closed out the game in the circle.

NU's Riley Shagena earned her third win in five innings of work. Shayna Frank earned the save.
