Blue Knights Can't Outlast Toppers in Five Sets



WEST LIBERTY, W. Va. - The Urbana University volleyball team suffered a narrow 3-2 defeat on the road Tuesday night at West Liberty.

UU won the first and third sets 25-22, while WLU took the second and fourth sets 25-19. The Toppers held on 15-10 in the final frame.

The Blue Knights fall to 18-13 overall and 8-6 against Mountain East Conference teams. West Liberty improved to 21-12 and jumped UU in the league standings at 9-5 in the MEC.

Katlynn Dunlap and Mikaela Beck led Urbana with double-double performances in kills and digs. Dunlap put down 17 kills and collected 16 digs and Beck recorded 18 kills with 12 digs.

Other leading performers included Madison Davis (11 kills), Alyssa Myers (49 assists), and Maia Dunlap (19 digs).

Urbana hit over .400 as a team in both sets won, but fell off toward the end to hit under .100 in the final two frames.

In the deciding set, the teams were tied at 5-5 until the Toppers used a 6-1 run to gain a 11-6 lead. UU got back within three at 13-10, but WLU closed it out with two straight points.

Urbana will close out the regular season at West Virginia Wesleyan on Friday (7 p.m.) and Glenville State on Saturday (2 p.m.). UU has clinched a spot in the MEC Tournament next week and will play for seeding position this weekend.
