Blue Knights Take Down Bobcats, 3-1

BUCKHANNON, W.Va. - The Urbana University volleyball team got back on track with a 3-1 victory over West Virginia Wesleyan Friday night in Mountain East Conference play. UU took the first two sets, 25-19, 25-18, before the Bobcats pulled out a 26-24 win in Set 3. The Blue Knights closed out the match with a 25-19 triumph in the fourth frame.

Urbana improved to 19-13 overall and 9-6 against league opponents this season while Wesleyan fell to 9-21 and 4-11.

UU sits tied for fourth in the MEC standings with the final regular season match slated for Saturday afternoon at Glenville State. Having already clinched the most wins and first winning season since 2006, the Blue Knights can become the first UU team to win 20 matches since that year's squad recorded 29 wins. Tomorrow's match will begin at 2 p.m. ET.

Senior Mikaela Beck and junior Katlynn Dunlap led the way as both registered double-doubles and hit over .300 for the night. Beck posted a hitting percentage of .362 with a team-high 23 kills and 13 digs. Dunlap put down 12 kills with a team-best 20 digs while swinging at a .313 clip.

It was also a career night for freshmen Audrey Pumford and Cecily Clark. Pumford recorded her first career double-double with a career-best 46 assists along with 11 digs. Clark gathered a career-high 10 digs in four sets played.

Additional contributors included Madison Davis (11 kills), Emilee Skerbetz (six kills), Molly Van Oss (five kills, three block solos), and Maia Dunlap (12 digs).

After cruising in the first two sets, UU faced adversity in the third by going down 17-11 but nearly made the comeback. Wesleyan took advantage of four UU miscues to put together a 6-0 run when the score was tied 11-11. The home team seemed to be in control after going ahead 22-16, forcing a UU timeout.

Then after the stoppage, Urbana came out on fire and tied the match back up at 24-24, a run that included five straight UU points when Wesleyan had a set point opportunity. The Bobcats ended up winning the set 26-24.

UU gained the momentum back in the final set with a late 10-3 run to seal the match.
