Urbana's Late Lead Slips Away in Five-Set Defeat

URBANA, Ohio - After forcing a fifth set, the Urbana volleyball team couldn't finish and dropped a heartbreaking 3-2 decision to visiting Notre Dame College inside the Grimes Center on Tuesday evening.

Urbana won the first set 25-20 and Notre Dame answered with back-to-back 25-23 triumphs. Then, the Blue Knights rolled to a 25-16 win to even the match and came up just short, 15-13, in the fifth. UU led 11-5 in the final frame and was outscored 10-2 down the stretch.

Both teams entered the matchup with identical records, but UU dropped to 8-10 as NDC improved to 9-9. Both teams are 2-3 in conference matches.

Junior OH Katlynn Dunlap led the way with 20 kills and 17 digs, while hitting a very impressive .429 with just two errors. She now stands only two kills away from totaling 1,000 for her carer.

It was also her 10th straight match with double-digit digs and her seventh career match with at least 20 kills, and first this season. Additionally, it was her 28th career double-double performance with 10 or more kills and digs.

Fellow junior OH Mikaela Beck contributed a solid effort with her third consecutive double-double by posting 17 kills and a season-high 17 digs. Sophomore MH Madison Davis tied her season-high of 11 kills (.391) and had seven block assists, while junior Aleese Butler was efficient on eight kills (.375).

Freshman setter Alyssa Myers had 45 assists and junior libero Brianna Burkhalter gathered a season-high 17 digs.

Urbana will continue its homestand with a non-conference match against Northern Michigan on Friday. First serve inside the Grimes Center is slated for 5:30 p.m. ET.
