Urbana Wins Fifth Straight Match

INSTITUTE, W. Va. - The Urbana University women's volleyball team picked up its fifth straight win after beating West Virginia State 3-2 on the road in dramatic fashion Friday night. It was the first five-set victory this season for UU, while recording the longest win streak during head coach Tim Balice's tenure.

Urbana claimed the first two sets, 25-17 and 25-22, but the host Yellow Jackets didn't give in by taking the third and fourth frames, 25-22 and 25-23.

In the fifth, UU jumped out to a 3-0 lead but that was erased as WVSU worked its way back in front, including a 14-12 advantage to force a UU timeout. Following the break, UU rattled off four straight points to slide by the Jackets, 16-14.

UU improved to 14-11 overall and 5-4 in league play. The Blue Knights are fifth in the Mountain East Conference standings and are just one game out of fourth place and two matches out of third. West Virginia State dropped to 4-16 (1-7 MEC) on the year.

Mikaela Beck led a balanced attack for UU with 17 kills and 14 digs. Katlynn Dunlap also had a double-double with 12 kills and 11 digs, while Aleese Butler put down a season-high 15 kills and had six blocks. Madison Davis posted 11 kills (.450) and eight blocks.

Maia Dunlap led the defense with a career-high 25 digs and Alyssa Myers recorded her second-highest career total of assists with 49.

Urbana returns to action Tuesday night against Central State for a 7 p.m. match in Grimes Center. UU will then host its final two home matches on Friday and Saturday.
