URBANA, Ohio – Urbana University's
Tyra James appeared on a pair of All-American teams released on Monday.
A 6-foot graduate student from Cincinnati, James is the second All-American in Urbana University women's basketball history. She joins former Blue Knight standout and fellow Cincinnati native Sam Riley ('07) with the prestigious distinction.
James, the Player of the Year in both the Mountain East Conference and Atlantic Region, earned first-team honors on the 2019-20 Division II Conference Commissioners Association (D2CCA) list of All-Americans. The D2CCA teams are voted on by Division II sports information directors from institutions and conferences.
James was also selected to the All-American Honorable Mention Team by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA). The WBCA teams are determined by member coaches.
In 28 games, James averaged a double-double (24.2 PPG/10.7 RBG) and ranked second nationally in made field goals with 265. Her 24.2 points per game is the second-best mark recorded by an MEC player. Altogether, James racked up 17 double-doubles and was one of three players in Division II to produce two triple-doubles this season.
Additionally, James broke Urbana single-season records for points (678) and made free throws (133), while tying the single-game scoring record (38). Her 300 rebounds is the second-best mark in a season by a Blue Knight.
James garnered several Player of the Week accolades. She was named the USBWA Division II National Player of the Week following a 29-point, 18-rebound performance in Urbana's victory at 24th-ranked Notre Dame College back in January. She was tabbed MEC Player of the Week on four occasions.
UU finished this season with an overall record of 17-12 and registered the second-best turnaround in Division II by winning 13 more games than last year. The Blue Knights also tied a program record in the D2 era for most road wins in a season with eight.
