FROSTBURG, Md. – For the second straight road outing, Urbana's
Shaunn Monroe hit a go-ahead shot in the final seconds but enough time was left for Frostburg's Daniel Alexander who hit a game-winner with two seconds remaining, lifting the Bobcats past the Blue Knights 63-62 Wednesday night.
Urbana (5-18, 4-13 MEC) overcame a six-point deficit in the final 1:29 and trailed as much as 11 midway through the second half.
A corner three from
Drew Thomas with 27 seconds left made it 61-60 and then Monroe hit a pull-up jumper with nine seconds. Urbana came up with a key stop by forcing a turnover off the full-court press to set up the go-ahead look.
FSU's Alexander, who scored 34 points, got the ball in his hands and hit a contested fadeaway from the right wing to win it. Alexander carried the Bobcats all night long, going 13 of 24 and 3 for 5 from beyond the arc. Frostburg only had two assists the entire game.
Monroe and
Mario Lacy Jr. each led Urbana with 14 points. Lacy logged his fourth double-double with a game-high 12 rebounds.
Brandon Michrina scored 10 points off the bench with a pair of 3-pointers. Thomas recorded a team-high five assists.
The game was tied 26-26 after a sluggish first half of action. The Blue Knights trailed by 10 at one point, but closed the opening period on a 9-0 run over the final three minutes.
The run continued into the second half as a
Tayler McNeal three put the Blue Knights up 31-26. Shortly after, a
Mike Ryan jumper made it 35-30 Blue Knights.
Alexander would bring the Bobcats back though, scoring nine points during an 11-1 Frostburg run to take a 41-36 lead. The Bobcats eventually led by double digits, 48-37, near the 10-minute mark as the run swelled to 18-2 over a six-minute span.
Eventually, Michrina stopped the bleeding with a layup and the freshman from Sterling Heights, Michigan drilled a corner three on the next possession, trimming the deficit to six, 48-42.
Urbana worked its way back into the game with solid rebounding as Lacy's layup with 6:43 remaining cut it to a three-point game, 52-49. The two teams would continue to exchange blows down the stretch.
The Blue Knights shot 42 percent overall and 54 percent from three-point range, hitting 7 of 13 shots from long range. However, Urbana's recurrent struggles at the foul line came back to hurt the Blue Knights after going 11 for 21 (52.4%).
Frostburg recorded a 36-percent shooting mark while going just 3 of 16 (18.8%) from three-point land. The Bobcats went 16 for 18 at the free throw line.
The two teams split the regular season series with each squad winning on its home court.
