Blue Knights clipped in overtime

URBANA, Ohio – For the third time in the previous four matchups, Urbana and Glenville State needed overtime to determine a winner Wednesday night as the visiting Pioneers came out victorious 83-73 inside the Grimes Center.

Urbana dropped its fifth straight and slipped to 4-15 (3-10 MEC) on the season. Glenville improved to 12-7 (9-4 MEC). The Pioneers won their third straight over the Blue Knights and hold the all-time series lead, 12-6.

Shaunn Monroe drilled five 3-pointers and led Urbana with a career-high 22 points. Tehree Horn posted his second career double-double with 14 points and team-high 10 rebounds along with six assists. Mario Lacy Jr. scored 14 points and grabbed eight boards while Tayler McNeal chipped in with a career-high nine points on three treys.

Urbana was outscored 13-3 in the overtime period and held scoreless during the final two minutes. The Blue Knights allowed a late four-point lead to disappear and also led by as much as 10 earlier in the contest.

The game went to overtime tied at 70 after Glenville's Ty Robinson hit the back end of free throws with 16 seconds remaining in regulation.

Horn had put Urbana in the lead 70-69 after knocking down a pair at the line with under a minute left.

The freshman from Toledo came through with another clutch moment by draining a big 3-pointer in overtime to slice the deficit to three, 76-73.

However, Glenville's Steven Verplancken responded with a three and another jumper, both from the left wing, to put the Pioneers up for good.

In the extra period, Urbana shot 1 of 7 and had two crucial turnovers while Glenville hit 5 of 10 shots with no turnovers.

Verplancken was 9 of 15 from the field, including 4 of 7 from behind the arc, to finish with 22 points. He also had seven rebounds. Hegel Augustin (17 points and 11 rebounds) and Ty Robinson (14 points, 13 rebounds) each had double-doubles in the victory. Tyvon Taylor chipped in 12 points.

UP NEXT: UU travels to Carter Center on the campus of Concord University this Saturday, Feb. 1 for a 4 p.m. tipoff. The Mountain Lions (5-13, 3-10 MEC) are coming off a 90-73 road loss to Notre Dame College on Wednesday.
