AMHERST, N.Y. - The Urbana women's volleyball team dropped Friday's season opener against Mercyhurst in four sets, 25-15, 21-25, 25-17, 25-15.

UU continues play in the Daemen Invitational with a pair of back-to-back matches on Saturday. The Blue Knights take on the host Wildcats at 1 p.m. and then close out the tournament against Ursuline. Daemen swept Ursuline in straight sets on Friday.

Freshman Maggie Burns recorded a double-double in her debut with a team-high 13 kills and 13 digs. Sophomore Hannah Delor also notched a team-high 13 kills while sophomore Lexi Reinert added seven kills and two blocks.

Junior setter Anna Davis dished out 31 assists and also collected 10 digs for her eighth career double-double. Junior libero Courtney Niesen led the Blue Knights with 22 digs.

UU (0-1) couldn't climb out of an early 7-1 deficit in the opening set against the Lakers, but the Blue Knights bounced back to even the match at 1-1. The score was tied 15-15 in the second set and the Blue Knights used a quick 5-1 spurt to create separation, holding on for the win.

In the third set, UU found itself in another early hole and never led. The final frame was tighter as the Blue Knights fought to within three points, 13-10. However, the Lakers propelled their way to match point after a crushing 8-2 run.

Mercyhurst had a strong showing from the service line with 10 total aces. UU managed only two. The Lakers outhit the Blue Knights overall in the match, .250 to .110.
