Blue Knights outgunned by Pioneers on the road

GLENVILLE, W. Va. – A slow start to the third quarter dashed any hope of a comeback for Urbana University women's basketball in Saturday's 105-81 road loss to Glenville State College.

Urbana suffered its second straight loss and fell to 2-2 in league play and 5-4 overall. Glenville improved to 5-3 (3-1 MEC) on the season while notching its 13th straight win in the all-time series between the teams.

Tyra James led Urbana with 19 points, 10 boards and six assists for her sixth double-double in eight games. Sylvia Hudson logged the 28th double-double of her career with 11 points and 11 boards, while Sa'Dera Johnson broke out with a season-high 14 points on 5-of-11 shooting.

Additionally, three freshman scored career-highs including Kasey Knippen (8), Shalaya Heath (8) and Chloe Smith (7). The trio shot a combined 10 for 10 from the field. Kami McEldowney also chipped in with seven points.

Urbana shot pretty well overall at 50 percent, but fell victim to 27 turnovers, which led to 39 Glenville points, and the Blue Knights surrendered 36 offensive rebounds. The Pioneers held a 60-40 overall advantage on the glass.

The Blue Knights were able to stay within striking distance at halftime by draining 6 of 12 from beyond the arc. Five different players knocked down a three in the first half as the Blue Knights trailed 54-44.

Urbana had trailed just 28-25 at the end of the first quarter following a back-and-forth affair. A Hudson layup tied the game at 30-30 and then free throws by McEldowney tied it 35-35 with six minutes left in the second quarter. However, Glenville would grab control of the game with a 9-2 run over the next two minutes and never trailed again.

Glenville stormed out of the locker room and blitzed Urbana by forcing several turnovers in the opening minutes of the third quarter. The lead swelled to as much as 22 following four consecutive Pioneer 3-pointers.

Urbana started 5 of 6 from the floor in the fourth quarter, including back-to-back baskets made by Chloe Smith. But the Glenville lead was insurmountable.

Re'Shawna Stone led five Pioneers in double figures with a game-high 21 points. Taychaun Hubbard added 17 points and nine boards. Glenville attempted 106 shots total and made 10 of 43 three-point tries.

UP NEXT: UU travels to West Virginia Wesleyan (3-5, 1-3 MEC) for another MEC road matchup on Wednesday. Tipoff is slated for 5:30 p.m. inside the Rockefeller Center.
