URBANA, Ohio – A late scoring drought cost Urbana University women's basketball in Wednesday's 78-66 setback to Concord University at the Grimes Center.
Urbana, which suffered its first league loss, dropped to 5-3 (2-1 MEC) overall on the season. Concord improved to 5-2 (3-0 MEC) on the year.
Tyra James led Urbana with 19 points on 7-of-16 shooting, but had her streak of consecutive games with a double-double snapped at four.
Sylvia Hudson scored 16 points on an off-shooting night while
Bailey Draughn added 15 with three treys.
Kasey Knippen dished out a career-high seven assists while
Lexie Wright grabbed a career-high seven boards.
Urbana grabbed a 54-53 lead with 4:37 remaining off a pair of made free throws by James. However, Concord pushed back ahead and outscored the Blue Knights 18-8 in the final quarter. Urbana made just four field goals while shooting 22 percent over the final 13:12 of the contest.
The Blue Knights went into halftime trailing by only a point, 41-40, after closing the second quarter with an 11-2 run. Draughn keyed the comeback with five straight points.
After the break, Hudson put the Blue Knights ahead 42-41 with a layup, but the Mountain Lions countered with a 9-0 run to reclaim the lead. Concord also used an early 10-0 run to lead 25-16 at the end of the first period.
CU's Madison May led all scorers with 24 points, eight rebounds and five assists. Riley Fitzwater notched a double-double with 21 points and 15 boards.
Urbana shot 38 percent overall and made just 5 of 24 (21%) three-point attempts. The visitors made 49 percent from the field overall while hitting 3 of 13 from range. Concord also held the edge in rebounding with a 46-34 margin.
UP NEXT: Urbana travels to Glenville State College (4-3, 2-1 MEC) on Saturday for a 2 p.m. tipoff at the Waco Center. Glenville, who is the MEC preseason favorite, will be coming off a 93-73 road victory at Notre Dame (OH).
