Women's Volleyball Wins Five-Set Thriller

URBANA, Ohio – Urbana University women's volleyball outlasted Notre Dame College in a five-set thriller Friday night at Grimes Center: 29-31, 25-22, 17-25, 25-20, 15-11.

UU improved to 7-7 overall after winning its fourth straight match and remained unbeaten in league play at 3-0. Notre Dame had a five-match winning streak snapped and dropped to 14-5 (2-1 MEC).

The hard-fought battle was already the sixth UU match to go five sets this season. The Blue Knights had just one win in a five setter which came against Ursuline over the first weekend of competition.

After going down two sets to one, UU persevered through the fourth stanza and tied the match by closing out the set on a 7-2 run.

The Blue Knights had one final rally left in the fifth.

Notre Dame raced out to a 9-6 lead in final frame and held all the momentum. However, UU stormed back following a missed Falcon serve with seven unanswered points, and eventually the Blue Knights ended the match by stunning the visitors with a 9-2 run.

Junior setter Anna Davis tied the school record with 60 assists and junior libero Courtney Niesen set a new school record with 44 digs to lead the way. Davis posted a career night with 18 digs, six block assists and five kills.

Four Blue Knights had double-digit kills, including Maggie Burns (16), Hannah Delor (15), Lexi Reinert (15 – career high) and Kaitlin Trace (14). Burns and Delor also posted double-doubles with 22 and 19 digs, respectively.

Natalie Perez chipped in with nine kills, including the match point, and seven block assists while Jenna Franks recorded 15 digs.

UU outhit NDC .188 to .143 as the Blue Knights racked up 11 blocks. The two teams combined for 261 digs.

NDC's Mary Kate McHugh had a match-high 19 kills while setter Paige Staudacher logged 56 assists. Libero Alexandra Kaeberlein led the Falcon defensive effort with 35 digs.

UP NEXT: UU begins a five-match road swing Thursday night at West Liberty. First serve is slated for 6 p.m. against the Hilltoppers, who are 8-9 (1-2 MEC) on the season.
