Volleyball Completes Comeback at West Liberty

WEST LIBERTY, W. Va. – For the second straight match, Urbana women's volleyball overcame a 2-1 deficit and earned its fifth win in a row by defeating West Liberty Thursday night. The Blue Knights came from behind to defeat the Hilltoppers: 25-14, 15-25, 11-25, 32-30 & 15-10.

UU improved to 4-0 in MEC play for the first time ever and improved to 8-7 overall on the year. Thursday night's match was already the seventh five-setter of the season, tying the team's total from a year ago, as the Blue Knights improved to 3-4 in deciding sets.

Maggie Burns led a balanced Blue Knight attack with 15 kills and 15 digs for her fifth double-double. Hannah Delor also had a double-double with a career-high 32 digs and 12 kills. Lexi Reinert and Natalie Perez each chipped in with 10 kills while Anna Davis handed out 44 assists.

Overall, Urbana totaled 111 digs with nine players recorded at least two. Libero Courtney Niesen had 26 digs and Jenna Franks finished one shy of her career-best with 19.

Urbana cruised through the first set by a final score of 25-14 and looked good doing it. The Blue Knights had only two attack errors and outhit the Hilltoppers in the opener, .314 to -.047.

West Liberty (9-10, 1-2 MEC) took over in the next two frames as the Blue Knights held a lead for just one serve over the second and third sets, combined. UU resembled nothing of a team carrying a four-match win streak and had all the momentum built against them. The Blue Knights fell behind 22-9 in the second set, before making a short run near the end, and then suffered a brutal 14-point defeat in the third.

However, Urbana's true colors eventually shined through as the Blue and Grey grabbed the first point to get rolling in the next frame.

Neither team led by more than two points in the fourth, as the Blue Knights took a 24-22 lead on a block following a timeout. West Liberty grabbed momentum right back and held three separate match-point opportunities, including a 30-29 Hilltopper advantage. But, UU remained calm and scored off three consecutive kills from Burns, Delor and Perez to force the deciding set.

In the fifth, Urbana raced out to a 9-3 lead and saw its lead trimmed to two when West Liberty made it 12-10. But, the Blue Knights fended off the late rally by recording three straight points.

UP NEXT: UU makes the short trip across town to take on No. 20 Wheeling tomorrow night at 6 p.m. inside the McDonough Center. The Cardinals have never lost an MEC match in the regular season (100-0).
