Volleyball's Streak Snapped at No. 20 Wheeling

WHEELING, W. Va. – Urbana had its five-match win streak snapped in Friday's 3-0 loss to 20th-ranked Wheeling University. The Cardinals won by final set scores of 25-21, 25-22 & 25-14 inside the McDonough Center.

UU moved to .500 on the season at 8-8 overall and 4-1 in league play. Wheeling remained unbeaten all-time in MEC matches while improving to 16-3 (5-0 MEC) on the season.

Maggie Burns led Urbana with eight kills, nine digs and three aces while Anna Davis registered 25 assists, five digs and three block assists.

The Blue Knights were limited to an overall hitting percentage of just .015. Lexi Reinert had seven kills and Hannah Delor logged 10 digs with six kills. Natalie Perez produced five kills and five block assists while Kaitlin Trace chipped in with four kills. Libero Courtney Niesen gathered a team-high 16 digs.

In the first set, Urbana hung around within three points the majority of the way and tied the score five times. After a Wheeling attack error made it 14-14, the host Cardinals outscored the Blue Knights 11-7 down the stretch.

Urbana jumped out to a 15-9 lead in the second set on a kill by Reinert, and led 17-13 following a Delor ace.

However, the Cardinals climbed back with a 5-0 run and outlasted the Blue Knights again down the stretch in a back-and-forth contest.

The Blue Knights never led in the final stanza.

Wheeling's Haley Kramer led all players with 12 kills and Breanna Kramer added 10 kills, eight digs and six block assists.

The Cardinals hit .170 overall and recorded a 60-45 advantage in digs, while the Blue Knights held the serving edge with six aces to WU's one.

UP NEXT: UU continues the MEC road tour with a pair of away matches next weekend at Concord (Friday, Oct. 18) and Glenville State (Saturday, Oct. 19).
