Urbana Scores Five-Set Win at West Liberty

WEST LIBERTY, W. Va. -- Urbana volleyball captured a 3-2 road win at West Liberty Friday evening to remain undefeated in league play. UU won the opening set 25-19, before the two sides alternated set victories with UU taking the final set, 15-12.

Senior outside hitter Katlynn Dunlap led UU with team-highs in kills (24/.316 hitting percentage) and digs (17) to produce her seventh double-double of the season. Freshman middle Kaitlin Trace also reached double figures with 10 kills while Cecily Clark and Aleese Butler each had nine kills. Brianna Burkhalter played well on defense with 15 digs, along with Maia Dunlap who had 12 digs.

UU hit .222 as a team, including a .405 and .400 mark in the third and fifth sets, respectively. The Blue Knights recorded 10 service aces, led by Deandra Atwood's team-high three.

In the first set, UU never trailed and jumped out to a 7-3 lead to begin the match on a strong note. The Blue Knights kept it going into the second stanza by building a 12-6 margin; however, the Hilltoppers responded to even the score at 12-12 and used that momentum to edge the Knights.

The Blue and Grey led 8-3 in the third set and carried out another comfortable lead to grab the 2-1 advantage in the match. Again, UU went ahead 11-6 in the following frame, but the hosts built an impressive run and grabbed the lead for good to force the final set.

Right away, UU went up 5-0 and led the entire way in the deciding set. Katlynn Dunlap had six kills, including the match point.

West Liberty hit .203 as a team and was led by Caitlin Clarke's 19 kills.

Urbana will have a quick turnaround when it takes on Wheeling Jesuit (RV) tomorrow afternoon in Wheeling, West Virginia. Match start time is set for 1 p.m. ET.
