Blue Knights Come up Short at Cedarville

CEDARVILLE, Ohio – Urbana fell 3-0 at Cedarville Tuesday night in the battle for the Inaugural Knight of the Jackets Cup. UU could not overcome a narrow 26-24 loss in the opener and dropped the final two sets, 25-18 and 25-20.

After winning six of its previous seven matches, Urbana drops to 6-8 overall following the setback in non-conference play. Cedarville improves to 6-9 overall.

Junior Cecily Clark led the way with 11 kills and posted two digs for the Blue Knights. Clark started strong with five successful swings in the opening set. She also performed well in the service game and produced 10 total serves on the night.

Seniors Katlynn Dunlap and Maia Dunlap led defensively with 14 and 10 digs, respectively, while fellow seniors Aleese Butler (.375) and Taylor Clark (.333) were both efficient with four kills.

The Blue Knights hit .135 as a team while the Jackets recorded a .230 percentage on the attack. Eight Blue Knight reception errors and five service aces played a factor in sustaining momentum for UU.

UU jumped out to a 14-9 lead in the first set following a Taylor Clark kill, but the Yellow Jackets fought back to even the score at 14-14. Cedarville gained three points during the run off UU miscues.

Cedarville went ahead 23-19 but the Blue Knights gave a response of their own by tying the score a 24-24. Butler provided back-to-back kills to tie the set, but unfortunately, CU regrouped to claim the final two points.

Trailing 12-8 in the second set, UU battled back again to even the score at 12-12. This time, Cecily Clark provided back-to-back kills, followed by an Anna Davis ace and a Kaitlin Trace block, which forced a Cedarville timeout.

UU took a 13-12 edge following the stoppage, but the lead was short-lived as Cedarville closed strong.

UU led again in the third stanza, 7-5, but fell behind ultimately trailing 22-17. One last rally got the Blue Knights within two at 22-20 following a kill by Emilee Skerbetz. But the Jackets called timeout to regroup and sealed the match.
