Urbana Opens MEC Play with Strong Road Win

SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio -- Urbana opened the Mountain East Conference portion of its schedule with a straight-set victory at Notre Dame College Friday evening. The Blue Knights won by scores of 25-19, 25-23 and 25-12.

UU improves to 6-7 overall and has now won six of its previous seven matches. The Blue Knights also begin league play 1-0 for the second straight year. Notre Dame dropped to 6-8 overall following the Blue Knight triumph.

Senior outside hitter Katlynn Dunlap (Zoarville, Ohio, Tuscarawas Valley) led UU with 14 kills on an impressive .684 hitting percentage (14-19).  As a team, the Blue Knights hit .407 overall, including .565 (15-23) in the third stanza.

Sophomore Emilee Skerbetz (Granville, Ohio, Granville) also reached double digits with a season-high 10 kills while Cecily Clark (Cincinnati, Ohio, Princeton/Carson Newman) and Kaitlin Trace (Saint Paris, Ohio, Graham) contributed eight and seven kills, respectively. Senior libero Maia Dunlap (Zoarville, Ohio, Tuscarawas Valley) produced a team-high 12 digs while Anna Davis (Aurora, Ohio, Aurora) dished out a team-best 23 assists.

The Blue Knights started off strong, building a 17-11 lead in the first set, and weathered a brief NDC run to pull out the 25-19 advantage. UU ended the set on three straight points with a kill by Trace, followed by a Davis ace and Taylor Clark (Columbus, Ohio, Harvest Prepatory) kill.

In the second set, UU jumped out to another lead at 16-10 and went up 23-16, but the Falcons again clawed back to get within a point at 23-22. Fortunately, Katlynn Dunlap and Skerbetz came up clutch to provide the final two points on kills.

UU ended the match on a long run in the third set. With the score tied 8-8 in a back-and-forth game early on, the Blue Knights zeroed in and rattled off an impressive 17-4 streak. Three straight aces from Katlynn Dunlap and back-to-back kills from Aleese Butler ignited the huge spurt.
