Blue Knights Cruise Past Falcons in Straight Sets

URBANA, Ohio -- Urbana kicked off its final homestand by cruising past visiting Notre Dame (OH) in straight sets, 3-0, on Tuesday evening inside the Warren G. Grimes Center. The Blue Knights won by set scores of 25-19, 25-19, and 25-14.

UU improved to 18-14 (10-4 MEC) overall, clinching back-to-back winning seasons for the first time in the Division II era. The Blue Knights currently sit second in the league standings with two matches remaining in the regular season.

In addition, the Blue Knights swept the season series over the Falcons (13-19, 4-11), who dropped their sixth consecutive MEC match in straight sets. UU now holds a 13-2 advantage in the all-time series.

Senior Katlynn Dunlap led the charge with 13 kills and 13 digs for her 17th double-double - a new career high. Dunlap surpassed the 1,600 kill mark Tuesday night and enters the final two home matches of her career this weekend as the school's all-time kills leader in the D-II era.

The Blue Knights out-hit the Falcons .313 to .068 while Cecily Clark and Emilee Skerbetz chipped in with nine and six kills, respectively.  UU totaled eight aces, including three each by Courtney Niesen and Brianna Burkhalter. Niesen finished with 11 digs.

UU limited NDC's Melissa Maczuzak, who entered the contest ranked third in the nation for kills, to just seven points off 35 attack attempts.

In the first set, UU overcame a 6-2 deficit by churning out a 5-0 run midway through the frame to grab a 13-11 lead. Then, Burkhalter's three aces keyed a big 6-0 spurt to put the Blue Knights ahead 21-16 with all of the momentum.
The second stanza featured the reverse result at the beginning as UU jumped out to a 7-2 lead on a Dunlap kill. However, the Falcons battled back and ended up with a lead late in the set, 19-18.

Clark came up big with the tying point on a kill, igniting a massive UU run that ended with seven consecutive Blue Knight points to end the set for a 2-0 lead. Freshman middle hitter Kaitlin Trace produced two big blocks during down the final stretch.

In the final set, UU raced out to a 17-4 lead and never looked back. Cecily Clark had six of her nine kills in the third frame.

UU hosts West Liberty Friday night at 7 p.m. and Wheeling Jesuit Saturday at 5:30 p.m. inside Grimes Center. The Blue Knights will honor their six seniors prior to the start of Friday night's match.
