UU Squanders Lead in Second Straight Five-Setter

URBANA, Ohio -- Urbana volleyball fell in five sets for the second straight day at Grimes Center Saturday afternoon against Shepherd. UU (8-11, 2-3 MEC) jumped out to a 2-1 match lead, but the SU (14-4, 3-2 MEC) bounced back in the final two frames.

Shepherd claimed the opening set 26-24 and UU responded well with 25-20 and 25-19 triumphs. Then, the Rams pulled out a 25-18 win to force the final set where UU let a 9-6 advantage slip away in the 15-11 finale.

Katlynn Dunlap led the Blue Knights with 23 kills and 16 digs, along with Kaitlin Trace (14 kills/4 blocks) and Cecily Clark (14 kills). Courtney Niesen and Brianna Burkhalter each collected 11 digs on the defensive side while Anna Davis led with 32 assists at setter.

In the fifth set, Shepherd led 3-1 following back-to-back kills but Urbana countered with kills by Trace and Dunlap to even the score. Then, the Blue Knights went up 9-6 on Cecily Clark's kill but the momentum ended there. The Rams rattled off eight consecutive points to go up for good.

Up next:
Urbana travels to UVa-Wise next Friday afternoon for a 4 p.m. match and then heads to Concord the following day to take on the Mountain Lions at 9:30 a.m.
