Blue Knights Cap 2-0 Weekend with Sweep of Concord

ATHENS, W. Va. -- The Urbana women's volleyball team improved to 4-3 (10-11 overall) in league play following a pair of road wins at UVa-Wise (3-1) and Concord (3-0). UU defeated the Cavaliers Friday night, 24-26, 25-21, 25-11, 25-23, and then rebounded with a sweep at Concord in a 9:30 a.m. match Saturday, 25-18, 25-22, 25-17.

On Friday against UVa-Wise, junior Cecily Clark led UU with 18 kills in a total team effort for the Blue Knights. Other strong performers included freshman Kaitlin Trace (14 kills, 4 blocks), senior Katlynn Dunlap (14 kills, 19 digs), sophomore Emilee Skerbetz (9 kills, 5 blocks), freshman Deandra Atwood (34 assists), freshman Anna Davis (27 assists), and freshman Courtney Niesen (15 digs).

Both teams won a set to begin the match tied 1-1. However, UU took control when it ran out to an impressive 19-3 lead in the third. The Blue Knights staved off a Cavs comeback in the fourth to edge the hosts 25-23 on a K. Dunlap kill.

Less than 24 hours later, UU took the court at Concord and raced past the Mountain Lions. The Blue Knights hit an extremely solid .355 overall on attack attempts, including a .538 mark in the third set.

Trace led the way with 11 kills and five blocks, while K. Dunlap and Clark both reached double digits at 10 apiece. Aleese Butler was steady with nine kills on 11 attempts (.818) and Madison Davis added seven kills. Libero Maia Dunlap led UU with 15 digs on the defensive side.

Up next:
UU will travel to Findlay on Wednesday evening, before returning home for three matches in Grimes Center this weekend.
