Urbana Falls in Five to Fairmont State

URBANA, Ohio -- Urbana let Friday's league volleyball home opener slip away in a five-set loss to Fairmont State inside Grimes Center. UU led 2-1 after winning sets two and three in dominant fashion, 25-14 and 25-18, respectively. But the Falcons overcame the deficit to edge the Blue Knights 25-22 and 15-11 over the final two frames. FSU took the opening set, 25-21.

Following the loss, UU drops to 8-10 overall and 2-2 in league play. The Falcons improved to 10-6 on the year (2-2 MEC).

Senior Katlynn Dunlap produced her fourth straight double-double with a team-high 20 kills and 27 digs. Junior duo Cecily Clark and Madison Davis also reached double-digit kills with 13 and 12, while Kaitlin Trace (8), Aleese Butler (6) and Emilee Skerbetz (5) were other contributors. Senior Brianna Burkhalter picked up the start at libero, notching 12 digs on the defensive side. Courtney Niesen collected 10 digs while Anna Davis posted a double-double with 11 digs and team-high 33 assists.

UU hit .189 as a unit, including a match-high .267 in the second stanza. The Fairmont State squad hit .197 overall with a .318 mark in the final set. The Falcons were led by Mackenzie Harrison's match-best 26 kills and 18 digs.

Up next:
UU hosts Shepherd tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m. inside Grimes Center. The Rams are 13-4 on the year and coming off a 3-1 win Friday night at Notre Dame (OH).
