CHARLESTON, W. Va. – The Urbana University men's basketball team fell to Charleston 88-73 Saturday at the Civic Center.
Urbana (1-20, 0-16) never led during the contest and suffered its 18th consecutive loss, as Charleston (12-10, 9-7) completed the season sweep over the Blue Knights.
The Blue Knights only trailed by six at halftime, but a 10-0 UC run with 12:40 left in the game pushed the Golden Eagles ahead for good.
Freshman
Austin Adams scored 14 in the second half and totaled a career-high 16 points to lead four players in double figures.
Dimitri Abner poured in 14 points, while
Carlas Jackson added 12 and
Jahmere Howze chipped in with 10.
UU shot just 32 percent overall and made 19 of 23 (83 percent) attempts from the free-throw line. UC hit 41 percent of its shots and out-muscled the Blue Knights 55-39 on the glass.
Facing its biggest deficit of the first half at 29-16, Urbana received a lift from the play of Jackson, who connected on two four-point plays late in the half. He was fouled on back-to-back three's and converted both free throws, making the score 32-24 Golden Eagles with 5:24 until the break.
UC went up by double digits near the halftime buzzer, but redshirt freshman
Demetrius Carr knocked down a trey and freshman
Caleb Mitchell sunk a free throw with one second left to trim the UC lead to 38-32.
UU trailed by double digits for the majority of the second half, where the Golden Eagles led by as much as 22.
Urbana returns home next week for a pair of league games against second-ranked Fairmont State (Thursday, Feb. 11) and Shepherd (Saturday, Feb. 13).
