Urbana Stumbles in Narrow 3-2 Quarterfinal Loss

Blue Knights finish 20-14 overall on the year

WHEELING, W. Va. – After forcing a fifth set, the fourth-seeded Urbana University women's volleyball team came up short 3-2 against No. 5 seed West Liberty in a Mountain East Conference quarterfinal match Thursday night.

Urbana had a tremendous fall, posting the first winning season and first 20-win campaign in 10 years with a 20-14 overall record. West Liberty improved to 23-13 and will move on to Friday night's semifinals.

In her final match, All-MEC first-teamer Mikaela Beck put down a career-high 27 kills and gathered 15 digs for a double-double. Katlynn Dunlap also posted a double-double effort with 11 kills and 23 digs. Madison Davis had the team's second-highest kill total with 12. Setter Alyssa Myers dished out 49 assists and libero Maia Dunlap had 17 digs.

UU had 76 points compared to WLU's 70 in the team stats, including an 82-58 UU margin in digs. The Blue Knights hit .154 overall while the 'Toppers swung at a .174 clip.

It was the second time in nine days that a fifth set was necessary to determine a winner between these two squads.

The Hilltoppers won the first set 25-22 before the Blue Knights claimed the second frame 25-19. Each team responded again by alternating the next two stanzas. WLU took the third 25-20 and then UU captured the fourth in dramatic fashion, 25-20, after trailing 15-9 at one point.

Thursday's final set went back-and-forth, featuring six ties and five lead changes.

West Liberty grabbed the first lead 2-0, but UU rattled off five straight points for a 5-2 lead. After a 9-9 tie, UU recorded two more points for an 11-9 advantage to force a Hilltopper timeout. Unfortunately, those were the final points for UU as West Liberty came out of the stoppage with six consecutive points.

Katlynn Dunlap, Mikaela Beck and Alyssa Myers were presented with their All-MEC awards prior to the match.
