Urbana Splits Weekend After Moving Past Shepherd

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W. Va. - The Urbana volleyball team claimed its second league victory after moving past Shepherd in four sets on Saturday afternoon. UU won the first two sets 25-22, 25-16, and then dropped the third set 12-25 before clinching the match 25-20 in the fourth.

The Blue Knights improved to 8-9 overall and got back to 2-2 in Mountain East Conference play. UU will return to the Warren G. Grimes Center next week to begin a five-match homestand.

Mikaela Beck led UU with 14 kills and 12 digs for her seventh double-double. Madison Davis tied her season-high with 11 kills, while Molly Van Oss recorded her season-high with nine kills. Katlynn Dunlap had seven kills and 10 digs, raising her career kills total to 978. Setter Alyssa Myers had a double-double with 37 assists and 11 digs.

In the first set, UU jumped out to a 10-3 lead but the Rams climbed back to get within two points at 22-20. Then, a Beck kill sparked a quick 5-2 spurt capped by a set-ending kill from Van Oss.

The second set started out closer with UU edging out to a 14-12 lead, and then the Blue Knights went on a 11-4 run to end it. Shepherd bounced back in the third set to prevent the sweep, but UU proved too powerful in the fourth and final frame.

Shepherd was led by Jaila Bell (11 kills/11 digs) and Peyton Lindblad (10 kills).

Urbana will host Notre Dame on Tuesday evening (Oct. 4) with a 7 p.m. scheduled start time.
