Urbana Overpowered by West Virginia Wesleyan in 84-73 Setback

URBANA, Ohio – The Urbana University men's basketball team had no answer for Tanner McGrew during Saturday's 84-73 loss to West Virginia Wesleyan.

McGrew, who is one of the top players in the MEC, scored 39 points on 16-of-20 shooting and hauled in 15 rebounds. The 6-foot-8 forward entered the contest averaging 20 points and 13 rebounds per game.

The Blue Knights (1-18, 0-13) continued to struggle on the defensive end, allowing the visiting Bobcats (12-8, 77) to shoot 64 percent from the floor.

UU's largest lead was only a point, as WVWC went up by as much as 15 in the closing minutes.

Freshman forward Jahmere Howze followed up a strong Thursday performance with 19 points, while senior forward Dimitri Abner scored 15 points.

Senior point guard Mike Newton registered double-digits with 12 points and a team-high six boards, while redshirt freshman Demetrius Carr tied his career-high of 10 points and dished out a team-best five assists.

Abner's free throws with 13:05 remaining cut WVWC's lead to six at 48-42, but the Bobcats answered with a quick 7-0 spurt. UU never got back within single digits.

WVWC's Ja'Sahn Johnson and Garrett Grantham each scored 10 second-half points to reach double figures. The Bobcats outscored the Blue Knights 42-30 in the paint.
