UU Swept in MEC Opener at No. 10 Wheeling Jesuit

WHEELING, W. Va. – Urbana (5-5, 0-1 MEC) came up short in its Mountain East Conference opener at No. 10 Wheeling Jesuit (6-3, 1-0 MEC) Tuesday night, falling in three sets 25-13, 25-14, 25-16. The Blue Knights played tough on the road, but could not sustain momentum against the league's preseason favorite at the McDonough Center.

Sophomore OH Katlynn Dunlap led UU with eight kills, while junior Mari King and sophomore Aleese Butler each tallied five. Sophomores Maia Dunlap (11) and Amanda Toth (13) registered double digits in the digs column, while senior Mary Hendricks dished out a team-high 16 assists.

UU's largest lead of the night came early on in the opening set. Dunlap's first kill of the night put UU ahead 3-2, and a few plays later back-to-back block assists by Butler/Meghan Verhoff and Dunlap/King made it 6-3 Blue Knights.

Again, the Blue and Grey took an early lead in the second set when the scoreboard read 7-5 in UU's favor. Two straight kills by King evened the score at five, which was followed by two consecutive WJU attack errors.

That was it for the Blue Knights as the host Cardinals regained control in both sets. UU never led in the final contest.

Urbana continues its five-match road swing this weekend at Kentucky Wesleyan. UU is scheduled to play a tri-match Saturday against Trevecca Nazarene (1 p.m. ET) and KWU (3 p.m. ET).
