Late Charleston Run Dooms Urbana in Two-Point Loss

Jackson nets career-high 29 points on five 3-pointers

URBANA, Ohio – For the second straight game, Urbana saw its halftime lead disappear in a two-point loss inside the Grimes Center. The Blue Knights couldn't outlast league-foe Charleston over the final 20 minutes and eventually fell 91-89 Thursday night.

Urbana (1-6, 0-3 MEC) came out on fire, shooting 8 of 11 from the floor to grab a commanding 30-19 lead, and then led 49-36 at the midway break. The Blue Knights made 11 3-pointers in the first half on 69-percent shooting from deep, led by sophomore guard Carlas Jackson who hit five treys.

Jackson, who totaled a career-high 29 points, couldn't miss in the first half as he recorded 18 of the first 30 points on his five 3-pointers. Jackson was zoned in and had the crowd roaring, and then he sent the Grimes Center into a frenzy when his final trey went in after getting fouled.

The Blue Knights finished 52 percent from the field overall, but made only three 3-pointers in the second half (27 percent).

Four other Blue Knights reached double digits in the scoring column, including freshman forward Jahmere Howze (17 points/seven rebounds), senior guard Mike Newton (15 points/six assists/four steals), sophomore forward Matt Csuhran (10 points/six rebounds), and redshirt freshman Demetrius Carr (10 points – career high).

UU seemed to be in complete control when it came out of the locker room and built an 18-point advantage with 17 minutes left in the game.

But the Golden Eagles came storming back, thanks to a sizzling 68-percent shooting mark in the second half. UC dominated the paint, outscoring UU 52-28, which helped the Golden Eagles put up 55 points in the final 20 minutes.
UC tied the game at 63-63 on a 3-pointer with just over nine minutes left in regulation.

The teams traded baskets and then Jackson broke a 67-67 tie with old-fashioned three-point play to give UU the 70-67 lead with 6:39 left. A Csuhran 3-pointer made it 77-72 Blue Knights at the five-minute mark, and then a layup from Howze kept UU in front by three, 81-78, with 2:59 on the clock.

UC kept responding though, and a jumper on its next possession sparked a 10-0 run for the Golden Eagles to put the game out of reach with 22 seconds left.

Carr scored eight of his 10 points over the final 12 seconds, including a 3-pointer at the buzzer, but it was little too late.

Four UC players scored in double digits, led by Aleksander Kesic's 20 points. The Golden Eagles held a 45-20 scoring advantage from the bench, and held a narrow 30-29 advantage on the boards.

Urbana returns to action inside the Grimes Center on Saturday, as it plays host to West Virginia State. Opening tipoff is slated at 4 p.m. ET.
