Howze's 38 Points Not Enough in 99-92 Setback Against WVSU

Most points scored under Coach Summers

URBANA, Ohio– Freshman Jahmere Howze scored the most points by a Blue Knight since the 2012-13 season with a career-high 38 against West Virginia State on Saturday. But, it wasn't enough as the Urbana men's hoops team dropped its sixth straight game, 99-92, inside the Grimes Center.

Howze registered his second double-double in eight games with 11 rebounds, and now leads the Blue Knights with a scoring average of 20.6 points per game. He finished an impressive 10 of 13 from the field on Saturday and knocked down 16 of 18 free-throw attempts. Howze's 38 points are the most scored in a game under UU head coach Rob Summers, and most since former Blue Knight Danny Goins produced 45 against WVSU on February 6, 2013.

Urbana fell to 1-7 on the year and 0-4 in league games. UU has lost the previous three games by a combined 11 points, all at home.

Sophomore Carlas Jackson poured in 15 points, grabbed four rebounds and dished out four assists for UU. In his first start this year, sophomore Matt Csuhran recorded 13 points and grabbed six boards. Freshman Austin Adams also reached double figures with 11 points and five caroms. Senior Mike Newton tied his career high of 10 assists and scored eight points.

Both teams came out with tremendous energy and physicality in this one, as a total combined 57 fouls were whistled on the floor. The constant stoppage and bruising style of play hurt the Blue Knights, preventing them from finding a rhythm from beyond the arc. UU finished with season-low four made 3-pointers on 22.2-percent shooting from deep.

At the under-five media timeout in the first half, the scoreboard read 41-41 with both teams 14-of-23 shooting from the field.

The teams continued to stay even with each other, as a pair of Carlas Jackson free throws tied the score at 48-48 with 29 seconds until halftime. The Yellow Jackets caught the last break of the opening period on a layup at the buzzer, which gave the visitors a 50-48 advantage.

WVSU (4-4, 2-2 MEC) only turned the ball over once in the first half, and five times total, which is the fewest amount of turnovers by a UU opponent this year.

Foul trouble plagued the Blue Knights, as Howze picked up his fourth foul only three minutes into the second half. Freshman Justin Jackson, who is UU's only other player with significant experience in the post this season, also picked up his fourth at the 13:42 mark. Adams tied it on a fast-break layup, and then gave UU a 57-55 lead on a jumper with 16:15 left in the game. After Jackson was whistled for his fourth foul, coach Summers was forced to go with a small lineup and WVSU took control.

The Yellow Jackets continued to out-muscle the Blue Knights on the glass, leading to a 72-67 WVSU lead, which was its biggest advantage up to that point as the game entered the under-10 media timeout in the second half. Eventually, WVSU would get up by six, 77-71, with 8:48 left, but Howze trimmed it back down to a point at 77-76 after a pair of free throws at the 6:54 mark.

That was as close as UU would get.

Urbana will have an extended break to try and fix things, and will return to action in two weeks when it travels to California (Pa.) on Saturday, December 19.
