Blue Knights Pick up Key League Win

URBANA, Ohio – The Urbana women's volleyball team snapped a four-match losing streak with a crucial 3-1 league victory over West Liberty inside the Grimes Center Tuesday night. With the win, Urbana (11-16, 5-9 MEC) stays in the hunt for one of the final MEC playoff spots with two matches remaining. The Blue Knights will close out the regular season at home against West Virginia Wesleyan (Friday, Nov. 13 – 7 p.m.) and Glenville State (Saturday, Nov. 14 – 1 p.m.).

Katlynn Dunlap finished with a match-high 25 kills and .358 attack percentage (25-of-53), which tied the UU single-match record for most kills. She also recorded a match-high 19 digs, and now has 10 double-doubles on the season.

Madison Davis played her best match as a Blue Knight with a career-high 18 kills (.250), while Aleese Butler also came out strong with 15 kills (.257).

From the setter position, Mary Hendricks registered 59 assists and came up just one shy of the UU single-match record, which she recorded last season. Hendricks is already the school's all-time assists leader with a current total of 3,419.

As a team, the Blue Knights outhit the Hilltoppers .239 to .185, and UU went 49-for-88 (55.0%) on sideouts.

Urbana grabbed the lead early on 11-9 in the first set, forcing a West Liberty timeout. From there, the opening set remained close until the Hilltoppers built momentum and took a 21-18 lead.

UU head coach Tim Balice called timeout and the Blue Knights got back in it when they tied it up 22-22. A Megan Verhoff ace and Davis kill gave UU a chance to put the set away at 24-22, but the Blue Knights couldn't close as West Liberty hung on for the narrow 29-27 advantage. The first set total was the longest set played by UU this season.

In the second set UU tied it 9-9, and then went down 18-10 after a 9-1 Hilltopper run. Balice called another timeout, and that set the tone for the rest of the match as UU battled all the way back with a 10-0 run of its own to tie the set at 23-23. Maia Dunlap (16 digs) held the serve for all 10 points, as Katlynn Dunlap recorded eight of the team's final 11 points. By then, UU had gained all the momentum back as a Katlynn Dunlap kill and Hendricks ace ended it, and tied the match at one set apiece.

UU cruised to victory over the final two sets.

The Blue Knights led the majority of the third set and went up 24-17, before holding on for a 25-20 victory.

UU gathered its largest lead of the night in the fourth, racing out to a 18-9 advantage and then clinching the match with a final score of 25-15.

Tuesday night's win also evened the season series with the Hilltoppers, after WLU claimed the earlier meeting this season 3-1.
