UU's Late-Season Magic Continues

URBANA, Ohio – With two regular season games remaining, Urbana picked up a crucial league win over West Virginia Wesleyan Friday night in Grimes Center.

The Blue Knights swept the Bobcats in three sets (25-23, 25-7, 25-23), and as a result, jumped them in the MEC standings. Urbana (12-16, 6-9 MEC) now stands in the eighth and final qualifying spot for the MEC Tournament Championship heading into Saturday's regular-season finale.

Aleese Butler led the Blue Knights with 14 kills, while hitting a career-high .600 (14-for-20) from the floor. Her attack percentage is the sixth-highest in UU single-match history.

Katlynn Dunlap and Madison Davis were also effective with nine kills each, as Megan Verhoff recorded seven kills.

UU setter Mary Hendricks notched another double-double with 38 assists and 17 digs.

Maia Dunlap gathered a match-high 18 digs and Bri Burkhalter picked up 12 digs.

As a team, Urbana outhit the visitors .211 to .062, and posted an impressive sideout percentage of 76 percent (35-for-46).

UU jumped out to an early 4-0 lead and stayed out in front until the Bobcats tied up the first set 17-17. The two teams tied twice more over the next eight points, but UU never trailed the rest of the way as it pulled out the narrow 25-23 triumph.

The Blue Knights dominated the Bobcats in the second frame, recording the highest margin of victory in a single set this season.

UU kept the momentum rolling into the third as it went ahead 18-11 and then 24-19, but the Bobcats battled back. They made it a contest by closing the gap to make it a one-point game at 24-23, and that's when UU finally came through when Davis clinched the win.

Urbana will honor three players – Tara Eades, Megan Verhoff, and Mary Hendricks – prior to the start of Saturday's match. Start time against the Glenville State Pioneers is scheduled for 1 p.m. in Grimes Center.
