Urbana Outscores Division I Duquesne in Second Half During Exhibition Contest

PITTSBURGH – The Urbana men's basketball team fell 91-62 to Duquesne in exhibition play Tuesday night at the Palumbo Center.

Senior guard Mike Newton led the way with 14 points on 6-of-12 (50.0%) shooting from the field, as the Blue Knights outscored their NCAA Division I hosts 42-41 in the second half.

Sophomore guard Carlas Jackson, UU's leading scorer on last year's team that averaged 81.4 PPG, also reached double figures with 12 points (6-of-15) in 25 minutes of action.

The Dukes ran out to a commanding 21-1 lead, while preventing the Blue Knights from hitting a field goal until seven minutes had passed.

Urbana shot 39.5 percent overall, improving from 25.8 percent (8-of-31) in the first half to 51.5 percent (17-of-33) in the second half. UU made five 3-pointers, going 4-for-11 over the final 20 minutes.

Newcomer Aarmanni Garnett scored nine points in 15 minutes off the bench. He went 2-for-2 from three-point range. Returning sophomore Matt Csuhran chipped in with seven points off the bench, while freshman Justin Johnson grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.

UU head coach Rob Summers rotated 12 guys during the team's only exhibition matchup. Starters were Newton, Jackson, and three freshmen - Colin Curran (three points), Austin Adams (five points), and Jahmere Howze (six points).

Urbana begins the regular season with a pair of games this weekend at the S&T Regional Bank Atlantic Region Challenge, hosted by IUP. The Blue Knights open with the hosts Friday night at 7:30 p.m., and then are scheduled to play Pitt-Johnstown Saturday with a 5:15 p.m. tip-off.
