CHARLESTON, W. Va. – The Urbana women's volleyball team dropped both Friday matches at the MEC/PSAC Crossover Tournament, hosted by the University of Charleston.
In the first match, UU took a 2-1 lead after rebounding from an opening set loss but couldn't close out undefeated Shepherd. The Rams (5-0) won the five-setter 25-23, 23-25, 20-25, 25-15, 15-11. The Blue Knights led 5-2 in the final frame before the Rams used an 11-2 run to gain control. UU rallied back to within three before the match point.
Freshman
Maggie Burns led the way with 15 kills to go with eight digs. Sophomore
Hannah Delor produce a double-double with 13 kills and 18 digs, as did junior
Anna Davis, who logged 32 assists and 12 digs. Junior libero
Courtney Niesen piled up 25 digs.
With a short rest between matches, Slippery Rock took advantage of the Blue Knights having to play in back-to-back matches and swept UU in straight sets. The Rock came out on top 25-21, 25-18, 26-24.
UU led 21-19 in the third set following a kill by
Hannah Delor, but SRU climbed back with four unanswered points. Then, UU took a 24-23 lead but couldn't get the set point needed to keep the match going. The Rock scored the final three points to complete the come-from-behind win in the third.
Sophomore
Lexi Reinert led UU with 10 kills while Delor (8 kills, 11 digs) and
Kaitlin Trace (5) contributed to the scoring. Davis finished with 23 assists, and Niesen recorded 28 digs and Burns had 15.
UP NEXT: UU takes on PSAC Southeast Division preseason favorite Shippensburg at 10 AM. The Blue Knights will wrap up the tournament with a rematch scheduled against Mercyhurst, who UU fell against in the season opener last week.
