Blue Knights Trounce Cardinals for Third Straight Win

URBANA, Ohio – Urbana University women's soccer won its third straight league match with Sunday's 4-2 victory over Wheeling University.

UU improved to 4-4-0 overall, including a 3-1 home ledger, and is now off to program's best start in conference play with a 4-2-0 record against MEC teams. The Blue Knights are tied for the program's best start through eight games in the D2 era while already recording the most wins since 2015. It's also the first three-match winning streak since 2012 for UU women' soccer.

The visiting Wheeling squad remained winless at 0-9-0 as Urbana claimed the season sweep over the Cardinals.

Leading scorer Alyssa Edwards got going early with a pair of goals in the first 11 minutes. Her first goal came in the second minute off an assist from Alyssa Garberich. Then, Edwards added a penalty kick to make it 2-0 in the 11th minute. The junior moved into ninth place on the team's all-time career goals list with 12. It was also her fourth career brace and second of the season.

UU led 2-0 through halftime as the Blue and Grey dominated possession for majority of the first period.

Then, Wheeling came out of the break with pace and got on the board when Marley Magruder's first goal of the season trimmed UU's lead to one in the 50th minute, 2-1.

The Blue Knights didn't take long to respond.

Saylor Jewell's corner kick in the 60th minute found a wide open Kaylee Houseman in the box, who headed the pass into the back of the net for her first career goal and game-winner.

Four minutes later, Kristen Dickison scored her second goal of the year to make it 4-1. Dickison made a hard run down the right side as the left-footed Jewell bent a perfect through ball over the top. Dickison blasted a one-timer to the left side of the net.

Wheeling tacked on another goal in the 70th minute, but it was too little, too late for the Cardinals. The Blue Knights recorded a 22-15 shot advantage with 12 on frame.

UU keeper Hazel Sanz logged seven saves while WU's Megan Herter posted eight.

UP NEXT: UU plays on the road twice next week against West Liberty (Wednesday) and Davis & Elkins (Sunday).
