Bess Spins Four-Hit Shutout in Road Win

UU splits road doubleheader with NDC

AVON, Ohio -- Freshman pitcher Tyler Bess blanked Notre Dame College in the second game of Friday's doubleheader as Urbana baseball split a pair of road games. UU won 2-0 in the nightcap after falling by a run, 4-3, in the opening matchup at Sprenger Stadium.

UU (10-35) and NDC (18-29) will close out the regular season with another matchup Sunday in Urbana. The conference doubleheader will start at 1 p.m. ET at Blue Knight Field.

UU grabbed an early 2-0 lead after scoring a run in each of the first two frames, but couldn't hang on in a tough one-run setback.

Junior first baseman Austin Pratt tied the game at 3-3 with an RBI single in the sixth. Then, the Falcons were able to push across the go-ahead run in the bottom half against UU starter Vitor Takakura. In his final start, the senior right-hander went six innings and allowed just two earned runs. He allowed two earned runs or less in four of the previous five outings.

All nine Blue Knights registered a hit at the plate as UU racked up 14 hits. Mickey Losey led the way with three hits while Brad Burkholder, Mickey Barea and Zeth Tanner each recorded two base knocks.

//  GAME 2 (UU 2, NDC 0)
Bess (3-5) saved his best for last as the right-hander tossed the first shutout by a Blue Knight since 2016.

The freshman hurler allowed just four hits and retired the final 12 batters faced. He is only the second freshman MEC pitcher to pitch a shutout this season.

Losey stayed productive and plated the first run on a ground-rule double in the fourth inning. He's hitting .500 (5-10) over the past three games with a pair of doubles.

Then, UU pushed another run across in the fifth when Marcel Toney scored off an error.

Toney, Pratt, Connor Coy and Justin Drennen each provided a base hit.
