Losey Homers but UU Falls Twice at Home

Blue Knights dropped a pair of games to West Liberty, 4-2 & 12-3

URBANA, Ohio -- Urbana dropped both games of Friday's home baseball doubleheader against West Liberty. The Blue Knights fell 4-2 in the first game at Blue Knight Field and 12-3 in the nightcap.

UU fell to 6-26 overall following the pair of losses and now sit 6-12 in conference play. Visiting WLU improved to 12-15 on the season and moved over .500 in league play at 10-8.

//  GAME 1 (WLU 4, UU 2)
A two-run homer by WLU shortstop Ethan Estes to put the visitors ahead 4-0 in the fourth, eventually proving to be the difference. The Hilltoppers got on the board with a run in the second and also with another long ball in the third by left fielder Coby Eckstein.

UU responded with two runs of its own in the fourth. Junior right fielder Mickey Losey homered to left field to lead off the frame. It marked his second long ball of the season. Then, senior third baseman Connor Coy provided a two-out RBI single through the left side later in the frame.

However, the Blue Knights managed only two more hits against WLU starter Justin Retzer. The right-hander went the distance and struck out nine batters to earn his fifth win of the year.

UU's Vitor Takakura departed after two-and-a-third with an injury. After the abrupt entry, freshman reliever Chase Jessee pitched well despite four walks. The southpaw surrendered two runs with five strikeouts over 4.2 innings.

//  GAME 2 (WLU 12, UU 3)
Down 4-0 again, UU rallied to load the bases with no outs in the fifth which led to three runs scored.

Sophomore shortstop Daniel Quiroz knocked in the first run on a single through the left side and then Losey roped a liner in the next at-bat to bring across two more, making the score 4-3 Hilltoppers.

However, things unraveled in the sixth as the visitors put up a seven-spot. The Blue Knights utilized three pitchers in the frame after starter Steven Beall ran out of gas. The right-hander was tagged with six earned runs on six hits through five innings of work.

UU fell victim to four errors, three of which occurred in the visitors' big sixth inning. The Blue Knights were outhit 12-7 as Quiroz finished 2 for 4 to lead the way. Brad Burkholder, Zeth Tanner, Mickey Barea and Coy each singled.

WLU starter Parker Dyson (3-3) picked up the win after tossing 4.1 innings with six strikeouts.

UU and WLU will square off again tomorrow at Blue Knight Field with the first game of the doubleheader slated for 1 p.m. ET.
