Baseball Splits MEC Twinbill with UVa-Wise

UU caps weekend with a 4-3 victory after falling 5-4 in Sunday's opener

URBANA, Ohio -- After dropping three games by a run, Urbana baseball finally churned out a win to cap a four-game slate in winter temperatures over the weekend. UU split Sunday's twinbill against UVa-Wise with a 5-4 setback before responding in the nightcap with a 4-3 triumph at Blue Knight Field.

With the win, UU improved to 3-5 in conference play and 3-19 overall on the season. The Blue Knights return to action Tuesday afternoon at home against Wayne State (Mich.) in a 3 p.m. non-conference tilt. UVa-Wise moved to 8-13 (5-3 MEC) overall.

//  GAME 1 (WISE 5, UU 4)
Both teams managed only four hits each, as UU trailed 4-0 after four-and-a-half innings. However, the Blue Knights made a late push with four runs over the final three frames, including two in their final at-bat.

Sophomore Daniel Quiroz (2 for 3) and freshman designated hitter Marcel Toney (1 for 3) provided clutch back-to-back, two-out singles to make it 5-4. However, the tying run was stranded aboard in the seventh. Senior Zeth Tanner (1 for 3) had started the late rally with a one-out single, running his hit streak to eight games before it ended in Sunday's second game with the Cavs.

The Blue Knights first got on the board with two runs in the fifth, both delivered again by Quiroz (double) and Toney (groundout)

Freshman hurler Tyler Bess (1-3) suffered the hard-luck loss after going five innings on the mound for UU. The right-hander allowed four earned runs on four hits and four walks. He threw 85 pitches and escaped trouble by stranding a pair of runners in the fourth and fifth. Fellow freshman Ryan Townsend made his second appearance of the weekend and closed out the game with a pair of shutout frames.

Wise received a complete-game effort from starting pitcher Greg Duncan, who improved to 2-2 on the hill. The righty struck out five and walked a pair while surrendering two earned runs.

//  GAME 2 (UU 4, WISE 3)
In the second game, UU overcame a 1-0 deficit with two runs in the third and added two more in the fifth before fending off the Cavaliers.

Junior Austin Pratt's RBI double to the gap in right center gave the Blue Knights a 4-1 lead in the fifth. But, UU failed to formulate a big inning after still having two runners in scoring position with zero outs.

After escaping the threat, Wise responded with a pair of runs in the sixth, slicing the UU lead to one at 4-3. Blue Knight starter Patrick Orr got out of the jam though, and eventually earned his first win of the season. The senior righty tossed five innings of three-run ball on nine hits and five walks.

Veteran relievers Steven Beall and Robbie Guerrero III shut the door on the Cavs in the final two frames. Guerrero picked up his first save of the season with a pair of strikeouts in the seventh.

Wise out-hit UU 10-5, but five Cavalier errors in the field proved costly. Three opposing batters notched two hits, led by second baseman Brett Yates (2 for 4, 2B).

Five different Blue Knights registered a base knock while Connor Coy recorded the only other UU RBI on a groundout.
