Beall Out-Duels Wesleyan for First Career Win

UU Baseball splits road doubleheader in Buckhannon, W. Va.

BUCKHANNON, W. Va. -- Urbana managed five combined hits in Friday's baseball doubleheader at West Virginia Wesleyan, but escaped with a win in the nightcap by a 3-2 final score. The host Bobcats claimed the opener 9-0 at cold and soggy Hank Ellis Field.

With the win, UU improved to 4-6 in league play and 4-20 overall. The Blue Knights entered the weekend in third place of the MEC North Division. Wesleyan dropped to 5-5 against conference foes (6-16 overall).

//  GAME 1 (WVWC 9, UU 0)
Wesleyan went up 5-0 after three innings and tacked on four more in the fifth, while riding the arm of starter Jake Bishop. The right-hander picked up his first win in a complete-game effort by allowing only three hits with five strikeouts.

Junior first baseman Austin Pratt had two of the Blue Knight knocks and senior catcher Zeth Tanner produced a double.

Vitor Takakura was tagged with the loss after surrendering six earned runs in 4.1 innings. Reliever Brandon McRae tossed 1.2 shutout innings.

//  GAME 2 (UU 3, WVWC 2)
Urbana held on for the game-two victory as Robbie Guerrero III closed the door with the bases loaded in the seventh for his second save.

Guerrero came on after a stellar outing from Steven Beall, who allowed three hits in six frames with the only blemish showing up on a two-run homer. Primarily a reliever in the past, it was the senior's first career win in his fourth career start on the mound.

UU plated all three runs on two hits in the third inning, including an RBI single by Brad Burkholder and two-run double from Pratt. That was the only offense needed.

Wesleyan's clean-up hitter Josh Jano went deep in the sixth to make it 3-2, but Beall was able to escape the inning. Jano popped up for the final out against Guerrero in the seventh.
