Softball Splits MEC Opener with West Liberty

Freshman Bonno provides walk-off double in Game 1

URBANA, Ohio -- Urbana softball split its home doubleheader Sunday afternoon with West Liberty in the league opener for both teams. UU captured a 5-4 walk-off win in the first contest while the visitors took the nightcap by a final score of 4-2.

Both teams begin MEC play with a 1-1 ledger as the Blue Knights moved to 3-15 on the season. WLU now stands at 7-5 overall.

//  GAME 1 (UU 5, WLU 4)
After jumping out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning, UU warded off WLU's comeback attempt.

With the score tied 4-4 in UU's final at-bat, sophomore first baseman Bailee Faulkner and freshman second baseman Britney Bonno posted back-to-back doubles for the walk-off victory.

Bonno was due for the big hit, which snapped an 0-for-10 streak at the plate and marked her first collegiate extra-base hit.

The visiting Hilltoppers had claimed a 4-3 lead in the sixth after plating one run in four consecutive innings.

Then, senior Briana Bamber came up clutch in the bottom of the sixth with a triple to the gap in right center.That extra-base hit scored Courtney Kennedy from first base and knotted the game at 4-4.

UU starter Kayleigh Pate (7.0 IP, 8 H, 2 ER, 4 K, 2 BB) earned her first win inside the circle with a complete-game effort. The freshman righty performed well under pressure by stranding 10 runners, including bases-loaded threats across each of the final two frames.

Five of UU's 10 hits went for extra bases with doubles recorded by Bonno, Faulkner, Mykee Holtz and Margo Jackson, to go along with Bamber's triple.

Faulkner led the way with three hits at the plate while Jenna VanHoose had two. Jackson produced two RBI.

WLU's Savanna Sieger (2-3) took the loss in 3.1 innings of relief work.

//  GAME 2 (WLU 4, UU 2)
UU led again after one inning of play when Jenna VanHoose delivered an RBI double to plate Riley Curtis.

However, the Hilltoppers claimed the lead with two runs in the third and remained in front of the Blue Knights the rest of the way. UU scored again in the fourth but 12 stranded runners buried any hope of a comeback.

Carly Allen recorded a complete-game outing inside the circle and did not allow a walk to 33 batters faced. The sophomore right-hander surrendered two earned runs on 10 hits while striking out six batters.

Bonno and Bamber each produced two hits while VanHoose and Holtz registered the only pair of extra-base knocks for UU. The Blue Knights were out-hit 10-8 and committed four defensive errors.

WLU's Makenzie Amend (4-1) picked up her fourth win of the season in the circle.

UU remains at home tomorrow for another league doubleheader. The Blue Knights will host the Wheeling Jesuit Cardinals with Game 1 slated for 3 p.m. at Blue Knight Softball Field.
