Softball Suffers Pair of Losses to Wheeling Jesuit

Blue Knights fell 5-2 in Game 1 and 9-0 in Game 2

URBANA, Ohio -- After pushing back Saturday's doubleheader to Monday, Urbana and Wheeling Jesuit squared off at Blue Knight Field where the Cardinals took both games over the host Blue Knights, 5-2 and 9-0.

With the losses, UU fell to 1-3 in MEC play and 3-17 overall. Wheeling Jesuit improved to 7-12 overall and 3-1 in conference action.

//  GAME 1 (WJU 5, UU 2)
UU obtained a 2-0 lead after three frames, but five unanswered runs pushed WJU ahead in the late innings.

Freshman pitcher Kayleigh Pate (2-3, RBI) helped herself with a two-out single in the second to plate Mykee Holtz, which put UU ahead 1-0. Then, Holtz (1-2, RBI) brought the second run across on a double to left field in the third.

However, WJU starter Mallory Chapman settled in and retired 12 of the final 13 UU hitters while totaling nine strikeouts.

UU managed four hits, including two from Pate and one from Holtz and Riley Curtis. WJU, which strung together 10 hits, plated three runs in the fifth to claim the lead.

Pate was tagged with the loss inside the circle with five innings of work, while Jade Laviolette threw the final two innings in relief.

//  GAME 2 (WJU 9, UU 0)
WJU's Chapman continued her momentum inside the circle and tossed a one-hitter in the second game.

The game was scoreless after three frames with UU looking to even the series, but the visitors put up a flurry of runs in the fourth and fifth frames.

Pate registered the lone Blue Knight base knock, leading the squad with three hits overall on the day.

UU steps outside of league play Thursday when it travels to Cedarville. Game 1 against the Yellow Jackets is slated for 3 p.m. in Cedarville, Ohio.
