Baseball Swept by KWC in Non-Conference Series

OWENSBORO, Ky. -- Urbana baseball could not avoid the weekend sweep and fell twice to hot-start Kentucky Wesleyan Sunday in 40-degree temperatures at Panther Park. The hosts claimed the first game by a final score of 11-2 and blanked UU in the finale, 6-0.

UU dropped to 0-14 overall on the season and will open conference play next weekend searching for its first win. KWC improved to 10-7 and ran its win streak to six games.

//  GAME 1 (KWC 11, UU 2)
After Kentucky Wesleyan took a 2-0 lead, the UU offense made it a one-run game in the second inning on Zeth Tanner's RBI single through the left side. However, the Panthers responded with three runs in the bottom half to take control of the game.

Mickey Losey's bases-loaded single in the sixth pushed the second Blue Knight run across to make it 7-2. And again, KWC answered by scoring four more in the bottom half.

UU freshman hurler Tyler Bess took the loss in his second career start. The right-hander struck out five hitters in five innings of work, but was tagged with six earned runs.

The Blue Knights committed three defensive miscues and were out-hit 13-6.

//  GAME 2 (KWC 6, UU 0)
UU loaded the bases with one out in the first inning, but a double play ended the scoring threat and deflated the Blue Knight offense. The Panthers countered with a two-run blast in the home half and UU could not recover. The hosts finished the weekend series with seven home runs.

That was all starter Sammy Holder (3-0) needed on the mound for Kentucky Wesleyan. The senior right-hander rode the momentum for a shutout win with eight strikeouts and six hits allowed. KWC tacked on two more runs in the fourth and two in the sixth.

Losey led UU at the plate with a pair of extra-base hits, including a second-inning double and lead-off triple in the fifth. Austin Pratt also went 2 for 2 at the dish, raising his team-high average to .400 on the season.

UU starter Patrick Orr (4.1 IP, 5 K, 5 H, 4 ER) was dealt the tough-luck loss while Steven Beall mopped up relief duties on the hill.

//  UP NEXT
UU begins MEC play next weekend on the road against Charleston and West Virginia State. The Blue Knights will take on the Golden Eagles Saturday in a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. ET, before moving on to challenge the Yellow Jackets on Sunday.
