Late Runs Not Enough in Baseball's League Opener

UU falls at Charleston 12-9 & 11-6

CHARLESTON, W. Va. -- Urbana scored a combined 13 runs over the final three innings in Sunday's doubleheader games, but the Blue Knights came up short in both contests at Charleston. UU fell 12-9 in the first game and then dropped the nightcap 11-6.

UU remains winless at 0-16 overall while UC improved to 7-8 on the season following the league opening games for both squads.

//  GAME 1 (UC 12, UU 9)
UU fell behind after five unearned runs in the first inning, but nearly recovered with three runs in the fifth, one in the sixth and three more in the seventh.

Eight of nine Blue Knights recorded a base knock and six players registered an RBI. Robbie Guerrero III (2-3, 2 RBI), Zeth Tanner (2-2, RBI) and Connor Coy (2-4, 2 R) led the way with multi-hit efforts. Also, Daniel Quiroz, Mickey Barea, Austin Pratt and Brad Burkholder provided key hits.

Guerrero delivered a two-run single in the fifth to cut the deficit to 7-5 but that was as close as UU could get.

UU committed five errors which led to six unearned runs. Blue Knight starter Vitor Takakura was tagged with the loss despite not allowing an earned run. UC starter Brandon Harris picked up his second win of the year.

//  Game 2 (UC 11, UU 6)
UU trailed 11-1 before staging a late surge in the final at-bat with five runs, ending the game with the bases loaded and tying run on-deck. UC scored in every inning except the fifth.

The Blue Knights actually out-hit the Golden Eagles 8-7, despite trailing the entire contest. Burkholder (2-3, 2B), Coy (2-4, 3 RBI, 2B) and Mickey Losey (2-3) led the way at the plate for the Blue Knights. Zeth Tanner and Tanner Davis had the other two hits, including Zeth's solo home run in the fifth to get UU on the board - his third long ball of the season.

Freshman Chase Jessee suffered the loss on the mound for UU. Relievers Will Keller, Brandon McRae and Bryce Loeckel each made appearances on the bump.

Charleston starter Fultineer earned the win by riding five innings of one-run ball.

The Blue Knights committed three errors while the Golden Eagles had one miscue.
