Baseball Drops Doubleheader at Kentucky Wesleyan

Blue Knights fall 10-5 & 7-0 to the Panthers

OWENSBORO, Ky. -- The long ball sunk Urbana in a doubleheader defeat at Kentucky Wesleyan Saturday afternoon at Panther Park. The Blue Knights fell 10-5 in Game 1 before suffering a 7-0 shutout in the night cap, as the Panthers hit four home runs on the day.

UU's winless streak moved to 12 following the losses. The Blue Knights will search for their first win tomorrow in another doubleheader at KWC set to begin at 10 a.m. CT. The Panthers improved to 8-7 on the season.

Kentucky Wesleyan dashed out to an early 7-0 lead with a pair of long balls in the first inning and held off Urbana, despite the Blue Knights out-hitting the Panthers. Four UU defensive errors were costly as the hosts mounted five unearned runs, which proved to be the difference.

Senior catcher Zeth Tanner went deep in the second, a two-run shot to left field, for his team-leading second homer of the season to get UU on the board. The Blue Knights also scored two in the fifth and one in the sixth.

Austin Pratt (2-3) and Mickey Barea (2-3) led UU at the plate with multi-hit efforts. Brad Burkholder (RBI), Robbie Guerrero III (RBI), Griffin Stevens and Mickey Losey also singled in the first contest while Connor Coy chipped in with an RBI ground out.

Senior Vitor Takakura tossed a season-high five innings and struck out four, but was tagged with his fourth loss. The right-hander surrendered seven hits, four walks and four earned runs. Senior righty Will Keller came on to throw the final inning in relief.

KWC's starter Mitchell Jones (1-3) recorded his first win on the mound.

UU managed only four hits against KWC starter Chris Johnson (2-0) who faced two above the minimum in a shutout win.

Pratt, Guerrero, Stevens and Losey registered base knocks but UU failed to advance a runner past second base. On the mound, freshman Chase Jessee struck out two and surrendered four earned runs in 3.2 innings. The left-hander suffered his third loss.

Down 1-0, UU's best chance came in the third when Stevens and Losey led off the frame with back-to-back singles. However, a failed sacrifice attempt followed by a base runner getting picked off quickly doused the scoring threat.

The Panthers stayed hot at the plate and scored at least once in every inning except the second. KWC had five extra-base hits, while out-slugging UU 10-4. Panther center fielder Cody Bridges finished a home run shy of hitting for the cycle.
