HARTSVILLE, S.C. -- Urbana baseball opened the 2018 season Friday at Coker College with a pair of losses. The Blue Knights (0-2) fell in a narrow 2-1 contest in the opener and then dropped the second game by a final count of 9-2 to the Cobras (3-1).

COACH OESTER COMMENTS
"Offensively, we were anxious at the start," said UU head coach Jake Oester. "Their pitcher did a good job getting ahead in the count and we couldn't gain much momentum. He was throwing three pitches for strikes, in any count, and kept us off balance.

In Game 2, we started stringing together some quality at-bats, but we just couldn't come through with the big hit with bases loaded. Early in the game, we had a couple of chances to make some plays on defense, and we didn't execute well.

Overall, we know as a team we are going to have to play better on defense and come through at the plate with runners in scoring position."

GAME 1 (COKER 2, URBANA 1)
All three runs scored in the first game were pushed across in the fifth inning, as senior Brad Burkholder's bases-loaded single put UU ahead 1-0 in the top half.

With one out, senior third baseman Mickey Barea singled and senior catcher Zeth Tanner drew a walk to load the bases for Burkholder. However, UU failed to sustain the opportunity to tack on more after the next two batters grounded into a fielder's choice.

UU starter Vitor Takakura (0-1) tossed four-and-two-thirds in his season debut, giving the Blue Knights a chance to grab its first season-opening win since 2014. The senior right-hander allowed only one earned run while giving up five hits, and fought well throughout the game despite battling a career-high walks allowed.

Unfortunately, three of those base knocks proved timely. The Cobras began the bottom of the fifth with a pair of singles and a walk to load the bases. Then, an RBI single tied the game and a two-out infield error two batters later plated the go-ahead run.

UU managed just two hits off Coker ace Michael DeVacchio (2-0), who retired the final six batters he faced in the complete-game win. The junior left-hander finished with eight strikeouts with three walks, and the run allowed was unearned.

GAME 2 (COKER 9, URBANA 2)
In the second game, Coker jumped ahead with three runs scored in each of the second, third and fourth innings for a 9-1 advantage.

Making the switch to the starting rotation, UU sophomore Robbie Guerrero III ran into trouble after the Cobra lineup turned over and was forced to exit after allowing nine hits in 2.2 innings.

Barea and junior transfer Austin Pratt knocked in the UU runs with sacrifice flies, but that was all UU could push across in the second game. The Blue Knights left 12 runners on base, including two in the first and three in both of the fifth and sixth frames.

Sophomore second baseman Daniel Quiroz led the way with three hits, while Pratt and freshman shortstop Griffin Stevens each collected a pair of hits. Stevens' first career knock came on a single in the fourth inning.

Senior right-hander Steven Beall tossed 2.1 shutout innings in relief, as sophomore Brandon McRae and senior Will Keller also toed the rubber for the first time this season.

Coker starter Nick Taylor earned his first win, tossing four innings while surrendering two runs on five hits. The Cobras were led by third baseman Jon Koski (3 for 3) at the plate.

UP NEXT
UU and Coker are set to close out the four-game series tomorrow afternoon. The non-conference doubleheader will start with the first game at noon ET.
