HARTSVILLE, S.C. -- After leading 8-2, Urbana University baseball (0-4) let the series finale slip away against Coker College (5-1) and the Blue Knights wound up being swept by the Cobras in the weekend series. Coker claimed the first game 11-1 at Tom J. New Field Saturday before completing the comeback in the nightcap, 9-8.

COACH OESTER COMMENTS
"It was a tough way to close the weekend, but I think we learned a lot and we'll get better because of it," said UU head coach Jake Oester. "I thought we rebounded nicely in the second game by jumping ahead early, but we just could not close it out. Also, some more guys produced today and we'll keep working to get more consistent production throughout the lineup. We look forward to making the trip back to South Carolina next week."

GAME 1 (COKER 11, URBANA 1)
After UU's Daniel Quiroz reached third on a triple and scored on Mickey Losey's single in the top of the first, the host Cobras responded with nine runs combined in their first three at-bats.

Losey led UU with two hits while Quiroz, Austin Pratt and Griffin Stevens each produced one hit.

The Blue Knights had five hits total and only four base knocks against Coker freshman starter Tanner Wofford. The right-hander dealt six innings of one-run ball with three strikeouts, two hit-batters and one walk. UU starter Pat Orr (2.0 IP, 7 ER) was charged with the loss in his season debut.

UU freshman right-hander Tyler Bess made his collegiate debut with four innings of relief.

Coker registered 11 hits, led by center fielder Larry McCabe's 3 for 4, three RBI effort that fell a home-run shy of the cycle.

GAME 2 (COKER 9, URBANA 8)
UU loaded the bases in the top of the first and then seniors Mickey Barea, Connor Coy and Tanner Davis produced three consecutive RBI singles to ignite a 5-0 start for the Blue Knights.

Three Blue Knights posted multi-hit efforts including Burkholder (2-4; 3B), Davis (2-3; 2B) and Pratt (2-4; 2B). Barea (1-4) provided three runs, Davis knocked in a pair and Quiroz (1-2) and Coy (1-4) each recorded an RBI.

Making his collegiate debut, UU left-hander Chase Jessee got the ball in Game 2 and left after 4.2 innings with UU in front 8-6. Jessee did well early through the Cobra lineup and ended his first appearance with four strikeouts and four hits allowed.

Three UU runs came in the top of the fifth after Pratt opened the frame with a double, while Barea and Davis continued to produce with RBI hits to put UU out in front 8-2.

However, the Cobras got to Jessee in the bottom half of the fifth by taking advantage of three walks to load the bases. Then with two outs, Coker senior shortstop Bryson Conner lifted a 1-0 pitch over the left-field fence for a grand slam. That made the score 8-6 going to the sixth, where UU left a runner on third following a Burkholder triple and then Coker added three more runs in its final at-bat.

UU went down in order against Coker's closer Griffin Hollifield in the seventh. Five Cobra pitchers took the mound as reliever Derek Roy earned the win in relief.

Senior Zeth Tanner made his first career appearance on the mound for UU and was dealt the loss after giving up the lead in the sixth. Senior Steven Beall also made his third appearance of the weekend.

UP NEXT
UU will make another trek to South Carolina next week for a three-game series against Erskine College (5-2) at Grier Field in Due West. The Flying Fleet are coming off a three-game sweep of Cedarville.
