UU's Season Ends After First-Round Loss to UC

Blue Knights fall 68-48 to finish the year 12-15 overall

CHARLESTON, W. Va. – The Charleston Civic Center continues to haunt Urbana women's basketball after the seventh-seeded Blue Knights were bounced from the MEC Tournament Wednesday afternoon in a first-round loss to No. 10 seed Charleston, 68-48.

UU (12-15) fell behind early and faced a 21-7 deficit after one quarter after starting 3 of 14 from the field. The Blue Knights never recovered from the dismal start and did not hold a lead in the second postseason matchup between the two programs.

UC knocked down five treys in the first quarter to ignite the Golden Eagle offense, while out-rebounding UU 41-24 overall in the game.

"I felt like we came out flat in the first quarter and it hurt us," first-year Urbana coach Andrea McCloskey said. "We couldn't get our threes to fall. After that we settled down and started to play a little more aggressive but the ball just didn't fall our way when we tried to make our runs.

"Charleston did a nice job. They had a good game plan. They doubled us inside on Sylvia (Hudson) and then went to a zone to stop Stefanie (Davis) from driving because she is quick."

In the second quarter, UU was held scoreless for seven minutes but still out-scored UC 12-10. Back-to-back layups from Danie Shafer and Stefanie Davis right before halftime trimmed the deficit to 12 going into the third quarter, 31-19.

UU found its stroke out of the break by knocking down four of its first seven shots in the third quarter. Erin Morrow's three-point play cut the UC lead to single digits and Weston Minnich followed with a layup at the 3:25 mark to get UU within seven, 41-34.

However, the Golden Eagles quickly responded and utilized a 7-0 run to close out the stanza. UU never got back within single digits in the fourth.

In three postseason games at the Charleston Civic Center, UU is winless while shooting 32 percent overall and 23 percent from three-point range. Wednesday's struggle included a season-worst 1-of-15 (7%) shooting from beyond the arc, while hitting 19 shots on 54 total attempts (35%).

UU closes the first chapter under McCloskey with a 12-15 overall record, improving the win total by six from a year ago.

The win improved Charleston to 13-16 overall and allows it to advance to Thursday's quarterfinal round where it will face second-seeded Notre Dame College (21-8) at noon.
